At KOKKINA BOTANIKA, environmental protection is not simply a theoretical concept or a slogan. It is a daily, measurable practice. From day one, we have operated according to the principles of the Circular Economy: Reduce – Reuse – Recycle.
We are already rescuing and transplanting trees from businesses that no longer need them, while producing rich, organic soil (compost) by making use of organic waste and coffee grounds. Today, we are taking the next big step by combining the planting of herbs and trees with a model vegetable garden and a zero-waste chicken coop!
1. The Architecture of the Estate: 2 Stremmas of Green Life
To implement our project, we are using a total area of 2 stremmas (2,000 m²), designed with agricultural precision to provide our plants and animals with the space they need to thrive:
1,000 Mediterranean Herbs on 1.25 Stremmas:
Planted in rows, our herbs (thyme, oregano, rosemary, lavender, sage, and more) cover 1,250 m² of land, providing dense ground cover.
30 Citrus Tr ees on 0.75 Stremmas:
With a planting distance of 5 × 5 meters, each tree has 25 m² of vital growing space. This spacing ensures adequate sunlight, proper air circulation, and sufficient room for healthy root development.
Family Vegetable Garden:
It features traditional varieties that fully cover the seasonal fresh-vegetable needs of 2–4 people, along with 20 strawberry plants, providing pure and high-quality food.
Ecological Chicken Coop:
It houses 10 chickens, serving as the key “link” in the recycling of our organic waste.
2. The Pillars of Our Environmental Impact
The simultaneous planting of herbs and trees, cultivation of vegetables, and presence of animals provide fundamental benefits to the local ecosystem:
🐝 Biodiversity Protection & Natural Pest Control
Habitat Creation:
The wide variety of flowering plants — from herbs to zucchini and strawberries — attracts and provides food for essential pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Pest Control:
The essential oils of Mediterranean herbs help repel harmful insects, naturally protecting the vegetable garden and reducing the need for chemical pesticides.
🌳 Carbon Sequestration & Clean Air
The plants on our estate act as natural “carbon sinks,” removing carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere:
1,000 Herbs: Sequester 300–500 kg CO₂/year in their stems and roots.
30 Citrus Trees: Sequester 600–900 kg CO₂/year.
Intermediate Wild Vegetation (2.0 stremmas): Adds an additional 200–500 kg CO₂/year.
Total Absorption: 1,100 to 1,900 kg CO₂ every year!
💡 What does this mean in practice?
Every year, our estate offsets the carbon dioxide emissions produced by a modern passenger car traveling 10,000 to 15,000 kilometers, covering the annual driving distance of an average driver!
🔄 A Complete Circular Economy: Chicken Coop & Compost
Our chicken coop, with its 10 chickens, does more than provide fresh eggs — it helps close the material cycle:
Zero Food Waste:
Wild greens from the herb garden and all organic kitchen scraps become food for the chickens.
Natural Fertilization:
Chicken manure, combined with compost made from coffee grounds, is transformed into high-quality organic fertilizer for our vegetables, strawberries, and trees.
🌿 Soil Health & Water Conservation
Stabilization & Regeneration:
The root systems of the herbs help prevent soil erosion, while organic matter nourishes beneficial microorganisms and earthworms.
Adaptability:
Mediterranean herbs require minimal water, allowing us to direct careful irrigation toward the areas where it is truly needed — the vegetable garden and strawberries.
Looking to the Future
At KOKKINA BOTANIKA, we are demonstrating that a 2-stremma (2,000 m²) estate can function as a self-sustaining, resilient ecosystem. Through the combined action of herbs, trees, vegetables, coffee-ground recycling, and responsible animal husbandry, we are creating a true “green lung” with zero environmental footprint.
We invite you to follow our journey and become part of this change!
